Promoting research on antitrust policy, competition,
and market power.

The aim of the IOS is to promote research on antitrust policy, regulatory policy, and competition, and market power in real-world markets. Since 2003, the IOS has sponsored an annual International Industrial Organization Conference in order to accommodate the needs and interests of the burgeoning field.

Founded in 1972

The Industrial Organization Society was founded in 1972 by Stanley Boyle and Willard Mueller.

The IOS published the Industrial Organization Review (1973-1983), originally edited by Stanley E. (Gene) Boyle, and has published its successor journal, the Review of Industrial Organization, since 1984. For a brief history of the RIO, see Shepherd (RIO 2018). The RIO is known for frontier research and innovative formats, such as the annual reports of chief economists at major competition policy agencies.

The IOS sponsors sessions at international conferences, such as the American Economic Association and the Southern Economic Association annual meetings.

The IOS holds the annual International Industrial Organization Conference to showcase innovative and policy-relevant research in industrial organization and bring together economists in academia, government, and the private sector for discussion and debate. After a trial conference at George Washington University in 1999, the current IIOC launched in 2003 at Northeastern University. It has been held every year except 2020 at locations including Boston, Chicago, Savannah, Vancouver, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, and regularly attracts hundreds of attendees.

Since 2008, the IIOC has also featured Rising Star sessions in which promising graduate students present their work.
